Doja Cat’s Sophomore album “Hot Pink” is just that, HOT!

Offering up a diverse selection of sounds and features, Doja Cat shows off the musical range she holds with her sophomore album Hot Pink. With 12 tracks and three features, this album contains Doja Cat’s vibrant and conspicuous personality crafted into sundry songs. Releasing three singles to preview the release of her album, “Juicy,” “Rules,” and “Bottom Bitch” offered different sides and vibes from Doja.

The album begins with the futuristic bop, “Cyber Sex.” Doja uses this song to brag about the availability and commonality of sex that technology provides. Rapping “we freak on the cam / love at first sight, just a link to the ‘Gram,” Doja narrates where a DM slide can lead.

On “Rules,” one of the three singles, Doja demands a man who doesn’t play any games. Don’t we all sis? The beat resembles an old-west sound with a strong guitar presence.  With a confident attitude and a powerful cadence, Doja’s flow in this song is impressionable. Like tons of her other songs, Doja produces comical bars, rapping “bad yellow bitch with her eye on the prize, but n**** I ain’t no minion.”

Iconic rapper Gucci Mane joins the Californian for “Like That.” A Gucci feature is a signal for Doja’s rising status in the rap game and she knows it. Covering Gucci’s name on the tracklist, fans couldn’t identify who the featured guest was until the album dropped. “Like That” is a fun-loving song with no substantial bars; however, Gucci and Doja prove to be a good team.

Towards the end of the album, Doja’s soulful side comes out on “Streets” and “Better Than Me.” On “Streets” Doja shares some raw emotions surrounding relationships. Seemingly a lovey-dovey song, Doja sings about finding someone that matches her energy towards their situation, singing “No final fantasy, can we end the games though/you give me energy, make me feel lightweight.” Doja returns on “Better Than Me” to remind everyone of her dominant status over “them bitches.” The songs entirety is Doja bragging in an eloquent manner, “don’t gotta be slimy, honey, swaggers what I’m oozing/and they call her a trick because all she got is illusions.”

Doja w[raps] up her sophomore album with the already popular single, “Juicy” featuring Tyga. During a Genius interview, Doja reveals that this song is to show love to butts after her song with Rico Nasty, “Tia and Tamera,” showed love to the ‘twins’. This fruity song is a confident Doja having fun and being thankful for her assets. With Tyga’s help, this song might be the most notable song of the album.

Since becoming a viral sensation with the release of her song and music video “MOOO!” in 2018, Doja Cat has been working non-stop to craft a unique sound. With the perfect mix of pop and rap, Hot Pink is a solid follow up from her first album, Amala. My only beef with Hot Pink is the lack of female artists. At a time when women are dominating the rap game, I would’ve loved to see the outcome of a more feminine energy with Doja and some of her rap friends. Maybe we’ll get a Doja/Nicki Minaj song someday.
